The development of coalbed methane resources in the Powder River Basin has been extraordinarily rapid. To keep up with the fast-growing play, Geomap has created a special base map, W-2CBM, which shows only those wells completed in the Fort Union including coalbed methane producers, shallow strat tests, and deeper wells plugged back and recompleted in the the Fort Union. The Fort Union "fairway" happens to coincide with parts of the older Muddy Sandstone and Minnelusa trends. That conventional deeper drilling is depicted on maps W-2AB and W-2CD without the "clutter" of the shallower Fort Union wells. A comparison of the coalbed methane base map W-2CBM and the Minnelusa structure map drawn on the regular base map W-2AB in the same area is shown below.
