PALEOZOIC PLAY IN NEBRASKA Exploration in the Denver-Julesburg Basin has traditionally focused on Cretaceous
objectives, primarily the D and J Sands. More recently a Paleozoic play has developed in the Nebraska Panhandle.
In the 1980's the Pennsylvanian section was targeted in Cheyenne County.In the 1990's Permian pays such as the
Wykert Sandstone and Admire dolomites were exploited in Kimball County. The deeper Paleozoic boreholes can be
difficult to identify among all the shallower Cretaceous tests on a standard base map, so Geomap created a
1"=8000' map showing only the deep (ie. Paleozoic) holes in the western Nebraska Panhandle. A portion of map N-8,
contoured on the Red Shale Marker (Top Penn) is shown below.
Our 1"=4000' map in the same area (N-48) shows all the wells and is contoured on the
J Sand (below).
